Body Donation

All cadavers used in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology are obtained through the State Anatomical Program, administered through the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The vast majority of these are donated by individuals and families with a deep interest in furthering the causes of science and medical education. Information and forms are available from:

The Alton D. Brashear Postgraduate Course in BASIC AND SURGICAL Head and Neck Anatomy

This five-day course will be held at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine from March 4-8, 2013. This annual course was named in memory of Dr. Alton D. Brashear, a long-time surgical anatomist in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology whose knowledge of head and neck anatomy enriched the lives all who were privileged to work with him.

The primary teaching method is the dissection of the head and neck. Lectures, demonstrations, and audiovisuals demonstrating specific anatomical relationships of organs and organ systems will augment the laboratory dissections.

  • Admission

    The course is open to any individual who holds one of the following degrees: MD, DDS, DMD, PhD, DPT, MPT, or equivalent. Class size is limited so early registration is encouraged.

  • Tuition and Application

    Tuition is $400.00 for students in residency programs and $550.00 for practitioners. All costs must be paid in full prior to arrival. A $10.00 non-refundable registration fee will be withheld from any cancellation request made prior to the start of the course.

    Anatomy of the Upper Extremity: A Dissection Course

    This 1½ day course* will be conducted by the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University, on September 28-29, 2012. The course will cover the upper back and scapula, pectoral region, axilla and brachial plexus, and detailed anatomy of the brachium, antebrachium, and hand.

    The teaching method will be lecture followed by dissection on intact, upper quarter specimens. The course will be held in Sanger Hall on the MCV Campus, located at 1101 E. Marshall Street, Richmond. Lectures will be conducted in room 12-079 and dissections will be performed in the 10th floor anatomy lab.

    * This continuing education activity meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Assoc. of Colleges and Schools. 1.0 CEUs will be awarded and recorded with the University.

      The course is open to professional physical and occupational therapists that have completed an accredited entry-level educational program in their respective fields. This review course is designed to enhance and extend knowledge of human upper extremity anatomy via lecture and dissection. Class size is limited so early registration is encouraged.
