Instructions for Reserving Equipment

If you require “assisted use” of one of the microscopes, please contact the facility director; otherwise, for unassisted use, follow the instructions below to signup for equipment using the VCU CORES system.

Microscopy Facility Rules

Obtain an Account

To obtain an account to access the Resource Scheduler, you must first have been trained by one of the facility staff in the operation of the microscope(s) that you want to use. If you have not yet received a training session, please contact Scott Henderson, Ph.D., Director of Microscopy.

Reserve Time on the Microscope

Follow these steps to reserve time on a Microscope

  1. Click on Signup for Equipment to open the CORES Resource Scheduler
  2. Enter your VCU eID and password, then click the Log me in button
  3. On the CORES page, click on the Role link.
  4. In the Quick Links field to the left of the window, click Reserve Core Device
  5. Click on the arrow to the left of Microscopy Facility
  6. Check the box next to the Microscopy resource that you wish to use and click View Calendar
  7. On the calendar page (weekly view) for the microscope that you want to reserve, click on the start time on the day that you wish to use the resource.
  8. In the Selection page, from the pull down menus, select the appropriate Index Number, Start Time and End Time. In the Comments field, please leave a telephone number at which you can be contacted.
  9. If you need to reserve time in the following week, click on the >> button at the top of the calendar.
    Note: some of the microscopes have a time limit per reservation. As a courtesy to other users of the facility, please reserve only one session in advance. If you need to reserve a larger block of time or multiple sessions in advance, please contact the facility director at 804-828-0949.
  10. When you have finished, you must click on the Logout link at the top of the page.

Cancel a Reservation

If you are unable to use the microscope during the time block that you have reserved please let the facility director know 24 hours in advance. Users who do not arrive within 15 minutes of the beginning of the time block that they have reserved will forfeit their time on the microscope.“"No-shows” will be invoiced.

  1. In the calendar for the resource, click on the link for the reservation that you wish to cancel.
  2. In the Reservation Details window, click the Delete button at the bottom of the page.
  3. When you have finished, you must click on the Logout link at the top of the page.
